Wanting and Needing to LISTEN to and Follow The Lord of Love!

Dear Fellow Children of God,

As a parent, I have at times been frustrated when I would tell my children something, something which I intended for their good, or for the good of our family, and somehow they forgot it. Or they ignored it. Or they had not paid attention in the beginning when I was talking with them.  In other words, THEY DID NOT LISTEN!

However, you know the old saying, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”  I was also accused of such behavior many times when I was a child, for good reason.  In fact, I remember a specific time I was staying with my uncle and aunt because my parents were out of town.  I knew I was supposed to be home at 6:00 p.m.  But I was at the home of a good friend with horses.  I knew I was ignoring the time, so I returned home late.  They were furious, with good reason.  I DID NOT LISTEN!  In fact, my wife has sometimes suggested the same behavior.  Imagine!

The point is, that when I spoke to my children, it was ultimately for their good.  When my uncle and aunt set a time for me to be home, it was for my own good, so that they knew I was safe.  When my wife wants me to listen, the idea is that good communication strengthens our relationship.  And yet, people, myself included, still have trouble listening!  Frustrating!!

In addition to this problem we have with listening, I have been taught in numerous classes, that good communication depends more on listening than on speaking.  And yet, people still struggle to listen.  It sounds like a pattern, doesn’t it?

I share musings on these challenges from life because of Scripture verses which I have recently read.  In my devotional readings on Tuesday, February 25, the readings were from Jeremiah 43-45.  In these verses, after the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon, Jeremiah brings God’s word to Jewish exiles who have fled to Egypt.  Jeremiah shares God’s instructions for the good of these Jews.  Yet, consider their answer. “15 . . . all the people who lived in Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16 ‘As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, WE WILL NOT LISTEN TO YOU!’”  (Jeremiah 44:15-16)  Refusal to listen is not just behavior of people in our time. The people of Israel are famous for ignoring the word of God.

Then, in our staff meeting at First Lutheran later on February 25, we read and studied the account about Jesus’ transfiguration in Luke.  After Jesus’ clothing and face shone dazzling white, revealing His glory as the Son of God, the Heavenly Father explains this awesome experience to the disciples.  “34 . . . a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen One; LISTEN to him!’"   (Luke 9:34-35)  Even Jesus’ disciples are reminded to “Listen.”  Even though Peter, James, and John were followers of Jesus, they still struggled at time to understand His words.  The struggled to believe who He was.  Therefore, they struggled to listen to Him and to follow His instructions.

If we consider the disciples, and if we consider the people of Jeremiah’s time, we can learn lessons that will help us when we struggle to listen to our Lord.  First, consider the one who is speaking.  The disciples heard the voice of the Heavenly Father Himself. The One speaking to them is Creator; He is Ruler; He is Lord!  If there is anyone worth listening to, it is our Heavenly Father.

God’s words are not just words from the One who is all-powerful, but they are also words of love!  Fathers really do want what is best for their children.  Even more, our Heavenly Father loves His children.  Because the words of God are intended for our good in this life, and for our good eternally, it is worth listening!

Finally, the disciples were to listen to Jesus!  Jesus is Lord.  But, even more, Jesus is our Savior.  Jesus came to earth, for us.  Jesus suffered and died for us.  Jesus rose for us.  In my heart I really do want to listen to the one who has done all that for me!

The Heavenly Father spoke to the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration, After Jesus had risen and ascended, they better understood this experience.  Peter wrote, 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,’ 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,”  (2 Peter 1:17-20) Peter’s point was, “We needed to listen to the Heavenly Father when Jesus was transfigured.  You need to pay attention to God’s Word as well.”

Don’t you want to listen to the All-Powerful Lord who loves you, who forgives you, who lovingly has your life in His hands?  Remember the words of our Father in heaven.  “This is my Son, my Chosen One; LISTEN to him!’"

A Child of God, Wanting and Needing to LISTEN to and Follow The Lord of Love!

ABOUT THIS DEVOTION - I retired at the end of August 2019 from serving as full-time senior pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer, AK.  I was writing a weekly devotion previously entitled, "Thoughts from the Pastor."  When I retired many asked me to continue writing these devotions.  So I have continued writing.  However, with life's changes I now call this weekly devotion "Journeys Through Life as a Child of God."  Since I am no longer senior pastor at St. John, I felt it right to only send this message to those who asked to receive it.  (However, I am currently as Vacancy Pastor for First Lutheran Church in Gainesville, FL.)

So, if you stopped receiving these devotions and wondered why, now you understand.  And, if you are now receiving these devotions and do not wish to receive them, please let me know, and I’ll gladly remove your name from my distribution list.  My e-mail address is jonrock53@mtaonline.net.

My prayer is that these devotions help each of you in your daily walk with our Lord, Jesus.

Believing in The Holy Christian Church – Watching the Mystery of God at Work

Dear Fellow Children of God,

When it comes to your Christian faith, what do you believe?  The Apostles Creed is a good summary of what Christians believe.  Perhaps you, like me, “believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.”  If you are a Christian, a believer in the Christ, then you “believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.”  If you are a Christian, then you also believe God works in your heart through the Holy Spirit.  “I believe in the Holy Spirit.”

But what do you believe about The Church?  In the Third Article of the Apostles Creed we say “I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Holy Christian Church.”  It may be one thing to believe in God, the all loving, all powerful, Creator, Savior, and Comforter.  But it is something else to believe in the church! When I served as volunteer chaplain on a regular basis at Mat-Su Regional Hospital and introduced myself to patients as the chaplain, I often heard. “I don’t believe in organized religion.”  My response was, I’m not here to talk about a specific religion, but I will talk with you about God.”  Sometimes they were then willing to have a conversation.

There is a reason for such feelings of skepticism about the Christian Church.  Two weeks ago we read in worship from Luke 5, about Jesus calling Peter and Andrew, James and John, to follow Him.  After a miraculous catch of fish, we are told of Peter, when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." (Luke 5:8)  Jesus never denied Peter’s sin.  But, even knowing Peter’s failings, Jesus still said, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." (Luke 5:10) The work of spreading the kingdom of God, of ‘fishing for men,’ is a HOLY work. Yet, surprisingly, in grace, God uses sinners like Peter, like you and me, like other members of The Holy Christian Church!  I understand why people have trouble with The Church.  Yet, mysteriously and graciously, God chooses to do His holy work through sinners. That sounds like a recipe for disaster, and often we see a mess.  BUT, Jesus came “to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)  Jesus does call sinners to faith and forgiveness through His Church. And, Jesus uses sinners to do the work of the church!  That’s Amazing Grace!

Please know that the church is not the idea of human beings.  After Peter confessed that Jesus is “The Christ, the Son of the Living God (Matthew 16:16), we read, “17 And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’" (Matthew 16:17-19) The church belongs to JESUS.  Jesus BUILDS HIS church through the administration and sharing of His forgiving love.  Jesus’ church will accomplish bringing many to salvation through faith in Christ because, “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it!”  Throughout the rest of His ministry on earth Jesus instructed His disciples, and called them to bring others to faith in His love, found in Jesus death and resurrection.

That is a LONG WAY TO GO to share that I saw Jesus working in His church this past Sunday evening, February 16.  The people of First Lutheran Church in Gainesville, Florida, had been without a full-time settled pastor since the first Sunday in August 2023.  They studied, and met, and called two other men, who declined the request to be pastor at this congregation.  But, after prayer they were then led to call Pastor Chris Kollman. He said, “Yes.” On Sunday evening Pastor Kollmann was installed as the new man called to shepherd the sheep of Jesus in this place.

I told Pastor Kollmann in front of the congregation, “The people of First Lutheran have been praying for almost a year and a half for God to send a man to lead then in following Jesus.  They did not know who this would be.  You are that man.  It is a wonderful thing to be God’s answer to prayer.”

Surprisingly, God works to share His saving love in Jesus with the whole world through men and women who are sinners.  I do believe in the mystery of God’s work through The Holy Christian Church.  I saw God working on Sunday night!

Finding Love, and Meaning, and Life in Jesus

Dear Fellow Children of God,

This week, Friday, February 14, is Valentine’s Day, which we celebrate as a day of ‘love.’  Valentine’s Day is named after a Christian leader and pastor from the 3rd century who ministered to persecuted Christians, and who was martyred.  St. Valentine was buried in Rome on February 14.  But, if you read my devotions last week, you might be asking yourself, “He’s not going to write about love again, is he?  That’s what he wrote about last week!!

Last week I did write about God’s call to love, and His love as the power to love others, based on the Epistle Lesson for the previous Sunday.  That epistle was 1 Corinthians 13, which is also called ‘the love chapter.  However, after sending last week’s devotion I had a response from one of those who faithfully read my e-mails.  Please read and consider the message I was sent.

The Surgeon General’s “Triad of Fulfillment”

“In his final prescription for America, Dr. Vivek Murthy delivers a profound truth: well-being is relational, not just personal. Backed by decades of research, Murthy outlines what he calls the Triad of Fulfillment—relationships, purpose, and service. Connection, he argues, is as vital to our health and longevity as diet, exercise, and sleep.

At the heart of the triad is love—not the fleeting sentimentality often associated with the word, but a commanding force with the power to build, strengthen, and heal. It’s the thread that weaves together communities capable of nurturing fulfillment and belonging. Love, extended not only to family and friends but also to colleagues, strangers, and even adversaries, is the foundation of the triad.
The Triad of Fulfillment

1.     Relationships: With whom can I connect more deeply?

2.     Service: What can I do to help others?

3.     Purpose: What gives my life meaning?

When combined with the core virtues of love, kindness, grace, hope, generosity, and courage, these three elements create an ecosystem for meaning and belonging.”

I read this quotation sent to me by my friend and I was moved by these thoughts.  What struck me is that, if relationships lead to fulfillment, and if love holds our relationships together, think how important JESUS is to our lives.  Jesus is the source of love.  Therefore, Jesus is also the source of fulfillment in our lives.  Therefore, Jesus is the center of our lives!

For example, John 3:16 teaches, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”  Jesus is the source of love for the world, and for us!

One of the verses I shared last week is John 13:34, where Jesus teaches, “love one another: just as I have loved you.” We love others as Jesus loved us.  Yes, Jesus is the source of love!

Another verse of God’s word which I shared last week, speaks the truth of love in a way that amazes me.  In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)  True love begins with the sacrifice of our Lord for us.  Love begins with Jesus.  Jesus is the source of love.  Therefore, Jesus is the one who holds our lives together.

Some might feel like such thinking is simply religious nonsense.  Karl Marx suggested that “Religion is the opiate of the masses.”  Many people in our world do not want God in their lives.  Many don’t want anyone who might ‘interfere’ with how they want to live.  They don’t want Jesus as center.

But, the interference of Jesus is that He died on the cross.  The interference of Jesus is that He forgives our sins which separate us from our Creator and our Heavenly Father.  The interference of Jesus is that he saves us from death and judgment for everlasting life in heaven.  That kind of interference from Jesus brings love, and fulfillment, and meaning to our lives.  Personally, I do want Jesus to interfere in my life with His eternal, sacrificial, saving love.

Friday is Valentine’s Day, a day to celebrate love.  What does it mean to you that our love begins with and comes from Jesus?  What does Jesus’ love mean as you seek to show love to another?  For me, when I know what Jesus has done for me, His love helps me to love others, not just in words but in actions.  He taught, “love one another: just as I have loved you.”

A Child of God, Finding Love, and Meaning, and Life in Jesus,

Pastor Rockey

Loved by Jesus So I can Work at the Impossible Task of Loving Others

Dear Fellow Children of God,

When a young couple marries, they have all sorts of dreams of how wonderful life will be, maybe even how easy it will be, to live married with “the one I love.”  Nevertheless, many find out that, though we might think loving another person is easy, sometimes love can be very difficult.

On Sunday, February 2, I preached on the appointed Gospel Lesson, Luke 4:31-44.  But, in so doing I did not get to share the wonderful words of God from Corinthians 13, where He speaks through St. Paul to call us to love.  The whole chapter is beautiful.  Perhaps the best known section of 1 Corinthians 13 is found in verses 4-8a, and 13.  4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  8Love never ends. . . . 13So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”   These inspired words make Christian love sound poetic and beautiful. Christian living should indeed witness to God through actions of kindness and patience.  Nevertheless, while the poetry of this chapter sounds so beautiful, we can easily miss the depth of God’s call for His children.

Please consider some other lessons from our Lord concerning ‘love.’ God also inspired St. Paul to write in Romans 13:10, “. . . love is the fulfilling of the law.”  Yet, who can fulfill God’s perfect law??!

Jesus’ call to His disciples in the upper room is plain.  A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John. 13:34)  However, who can love others with the giving, perfect, sacrifice, with which Jesus loved us?

Finally, while love may sound so beautiful, listen to this seemingly impossible call of our Lord from His Sermon on the Mount.  43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”  (Matt. 5:43-44 ESV) Which one of us can love our enemy?  Honestly!

Yes, the Christian life is shown in love.  But that love begins with faith, faith that God has first loved us.  Think on what God says in 1 John 4:10-11, “10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”  For us to love others, that love starts when God loves us.  Or, meditate upon the unbelievable message from our Heavenly Father in Romans 5:8.  “. . . God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”!!!

As people born in sin, we sadly cannot and do not love perfectly. Instead, we often act selfishly, unkindly, and impatiently.  But Jesus loved perfectly. Jesus loved us in His agonizing death on the cross to pay for our sins.  Jesus loved us when He rose from the grave, defeating death.  Jesus loves us and offers eternal life to all who believe in Him.  I do not deserve the love of Jesus, but He has acted in kindness and patience, with sacrifice and forgiveness.  Faith that Jesus loves a sinner like me, helps me to love, however imperfectly.  Faith in Jesus enables me to even pray for my enemies, and to work at treating them kindly.

For recreation I fish and I play golf.  Those hobbies can look very easy.  Yet many have trouble getting fish to bite, never mind actually catching the fish and landing it.  It can look very simple to hit a ball which is laying still.  However, just because golf looks simple does not make it so.  When a young married couple, or a young Christian for that matter, considers loving others, such an act of giving may seem simple.  But it is not.  Nevertheless, Jesus’ love for us does help us to show love to others.  Remember 1 Corinthians 13, “now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

A Child of God, Loved by Jesus So I can Work at the Impossible Task of Loving Others,

Pastor Rockey
