Filled With the Spirit to Serve My Lord - ALL WEEK LONG!

Dear Fellow Children of God,

On Tuesday evening, February 27, as my wife, Kathy, and I were talking at the end of the day about some important characters we have been reading about in our daily devotions from the Today’s Light Bible.  From Exodus 31-38 the names of Bezalel and Oholiab are mentioned as craftsmen who would spearhead the building of the tabernacle, the traveling center of worship for the children of Israel in the wilderness.  Kathy joked, “Maybe we should have used those names for our children.”  In all honesty, when our children were born, I was willing to be a little more ‘adventurous’ in how we named them.  But Kathy had “the back porch test.”  She wanted to be able to call their names from our back porch and feel good about what she said.  We did not name anyone ‘Bezalel’ or ‘Oholiab!’

However, what strikes me about the description of these men is how God blesses them, how He equips them, and how He fills them with the Spirit for these tasks of craftsmanship.  30 Then Moses said to the people of Israel, "See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, 32 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. 34 And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. (Exodus 35:30-34)

When I think of the abilities and talents which the Holy Spirit gives, my mind first goes to New Testament verses about fruits of the Spirit (Galatian 5) or the gifts of the Spirit (Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12).  Galatians 5 tells us, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)  These fruits and gifts are descriptions of the person’s spiritual character and personality.  The deal with interpersonal relationships between God’s people.

But in Exodus, God gives skills of craftsmanship by His Spirit. Bezalel and Oholiab could work with wood and precious metals and fabrics.  They could create art in these media, and this art would help the Israelites in their worship. (If you want more information about these men, you could read Exodus 31:2 and 6, 35:30 and 34, 36:1-2, 37:1, and 38:22-23)  I personally believe the Lord also fills some with His Spirit for composing and playing music for worship as well.  The fact that God blesses people as craftsmen and artists tells me that our faith affects our whole life.  Our faith not only impacts our worship on Sundays.  The blessings of God shine through in our daily lives, at home and at work.

On of my favorite Bible verses is 2 Corinthians 5:15.  I assign this verse for memory to all of my confirmation students.  15 “and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Corinthians 5:15) Please notice that this verse instructs us for living – We are to live FOR HIM, FOR GOD.  This verse also teaches us how our Lord calls us, or why we would want to live FOR HIM – because Christ died and rose for our sake!

When I hear God’s call, not just to worship on Sundays, but to live for Him at all times, I am blessed by knowing about men like Bezalel and Oholiab.  The Lord filled them with the Spirit to do the daily tasks of their work.

What jobs face you all week long, at work and at home?  Do you see how you can approach these tasks as opportunities to praise and worship our Lord and even share His love?  What a wonderful lesson to learn that God gave His Spirit to Bezalel and Oholiab, and that He blesses us so that we may LIVE FOR HIM!

By the way, have any of you named one of your children Bezalel or Oholiab???

A Child of God,  Filled With The Spirit to Serve My Lord – ALL WEEK LONG!

Thankful that 'THE LORD CAME DOWN!'

Dear Fellow Children of God,

If you have been reading through the Bible with me you recently read some interesting and exciting accounts in the book of Exodus.  The people of Israel had escaped 400 years of slavery in Egypt.  God had parted the Red Sea so that His people walked through.  The Lord provided His presence in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.  He fed the people with manna and quail, and He miraculously provided water for a thirsty nation.  Then, and it’s a BIG then, then the people of Israel arrived at Mt. Sinai.  There the Lord gave His people the 10 commandments, and other laws and instructions by which to live.

Do you ever read God’s word and see something new which jumps out at you, something that has always been there, but you did not previously see?  That happened to me as I read through these chapters of Exodus.  In Exodus 19, as the people were about to receive the 10 commandments, we are told the following. 20 The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.” (Exod. 19:20 ESV)  It’s the first four words of this sentence which struck me, The Lord Came Down.”

To a people who had been in slavery, The Lord Came Down.” To the people trapped between Pharoah’s army and the Red Sea, The Lord Came Down.”  To a people full of doubt and wayward hearts, The Lord Came Down.”  To a people who needed help and saving, The Lord Came Down.”

What is going on in your life? Are you rejoicing in blessings?  Is there a new child in your family?  Do you have a new job you enjoy?  Or are you, or a loved one, facing illness.  Are you worried about a child, or a friend?  Are you struggling financially?  Have you lost a loved one.  Guess what, The Lord came down . . . to Israel.  God comes down, for us!

Do you know John 3:17?  17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. God sent His Son, or in other words, THE LORD CAME DOWN!  In Jesus God came to release us from the slavery of sin.  In Jesus God came to save from death and judgement.  For people in need, through Jesus, The Lord came down.

There are other ways in which this is true today.  God speaks to us in His word.  By His Word, “The Lord came down”.  In baptism God gives the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)  Again, “The Lord Came down.”  Through the Lord’s Supper we receive the body and blood of Jesus Himself.  God comes down.  Through the Holy Spirit living in the temple of our bodies, The Lord comes down.  And, we have the promise that just as Jesus ascended into heaven, He will return again some day as Judge and Deliverer. As we perhaps worry about the future, The Lord Comes Down.

Sometimes I read God’s word and it just hits me between the eyes.  At least that happened to me as I read Exodus 19.  Just what we need: The Lord came down. The Lord comes down.  And Jesus will come again.

I pray that you see the presence of God in your life.

A Child of God, Thankful that ‘THE LORD CAME DOWN!!

Pastor Jonathan

Observing Lent Because I Am Blessed by and I Am Responding to the Giving Love of Jesus!

Dear Fellow Children of God,

Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to love, falls on February 14 in 2024, as it does every year.  What would you give up to show, or even to prove your love for your spouse, for your child, or for another loved one?

In many ways, I believe that Valentines Day is a product of Hollywood and its portrayal of ‘romantic love.’  According to Hollywood, love makes a person feel great.  If someone loves me so that I do feel good, this feeling in many ways is a selfish emotion.  According to this idea of love, I am counting on someone else, the person I love, to give me this wonderful feeling.  I am receiving FROM them, or even TAKING from them.

But love like God calls for does not take. Godly love GIVES.  Consider a few of the Lord’s words to us.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) According to Scripture, God’s love is not selfish.  God’s love GIVES.

“13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)  The Bible tells us that God’s love, LAYS DOWN ITS LIFE!

“4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends.  (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) When Scripture defines love we are told that God’s love is PATIENT AND KIND . . . ENDURING ALL THINGS.

““10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:10-11)  God’s love pays for our sins!!  Godly love does not take.  God-like love GIVES..

Not only is February 14 Valentines Day, but in 2024, Ash Wednesday also falls on February 14. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent.  The Lenten season precedes Easter and points to our sin, which led to the suffering and death of Jesus.  Lent, therefore, is a time of repentance, and often a time of fasting.  That is why we use ashes to begin the Lenten season, as an outward sign of sorrow for our sin.

Lent is also a time when we remember God’s sacrificial love for us in Jesus.  Lent has become a time when God’s people seek to grow in our Lord’s saving love through worship and even fasting, giving something up to remember our Lord’s giving love. The outward act of fasting by giving something up means nothing by itself.  But, when this act shows a heart sorry for sin, a heart wanting to grow in God’s love, then such an outward action can help us in our faith.

What would you give up to show, or even to prove your love for your spouse, for your child, or for another loved one?  How will you grow this Lent in understanding the gift of God’s Son, as the ultimate act of love?  I encourage you to remember the words of Jesus, “13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Thankful for Guidance and Life Found in The Word of God!

Dear Fellow Children of God,

Kathy and I recently received a surprise from a purchase she made at a local second-hand resale shop.  Kathy worked 45 years as a registered nurse.  One of the books she spent money to purchase a number of times over the years was The Physician’s Desk Reference.  This is a book which lists drugs used in medical practices and hospitals. It gave information about what these drugs treated, how they helped, and also shared warnings about dangers related to the drugs.  Not only did Kathy buy a number of editions of this book to keep at home, but she told me that there was also always a copy of the Physician’s Desk Reference available for staff on the floors of the hospitals where she worked.

The other day as she was walking through a local second-hand resale shop, Kathy saw something that looked familiar.  It was the same navy blue color.  The book had the same lettering and a similar, if not quite the same, title to the book which she had used all these years.  So for $.50 Kathy purchased and brought home the Physicians’ LIFE Reference.

On the inside pages of this book was a Table of Contents.  Some of the listed chapter topics were “Questions of the Ages,” “The Body”, “Business and Career”, “Emotions,” and many more.  When we turn to each section we find, Bible references for Scripture verses on that topic.  And then that major portion of this book was The New King James Version of the Bible.  The Physician’s LIFE Reference was the Bible! Maybe we should have expected that surprise.  On the outside cover it says, “Authored by The World’s Greatest Physician.”

According to a letter on the inside page of The Physicians Life Reference, the company which published this book, Clint Pharmaceuticals from Nashville, TN, is willing to donate copies to doctor’s offices for patients or staff and waiting rooms.  In fact, if any patient wants their own copy, Clint Pharmaceuticals will donate it through their doctor, or the book can be ordered at clintpharmaceuticals.com.  I looked at their web site and the title on the page with this offer reads, “When Treating Pain just isn’t enough.”  Needless to say, this is not what Kathy expected when she picked up the book at the second-hand store.  It was not what I expected when she showed me the book.  We were both surprised.

I do believe the book points to a great truth: God’s Word gives direction and gives life, through God’s love in Jesus.

Psalm 119:105 teaches “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  God’s Word is a guide for our life.

In 2 Timothy 3:14-17 St. Paul teaches, 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” God’s word teaches, corrects, and trains in righteousness. More importantly, God’s word makes us “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (See also Romans 10:17, 1 Peter 1:23, and Hebrews 4:12.)

Of course, THE Word of God, God’s ultimate communication, is Jesus. Consider John 1.  1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. . . . 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  In Jesus, THE Word, our Lord best teaches us who He is.  In Jesus, THE Word, God share His love, His salvation, eternal life.

I find it interesting that as we have again begun reading Scripture, this time with many friends and church members around the country, that at this time Kathy found this gem, “The Physicians Life Reference,” in that store.

Are you following the guidance, are you living in the love of God’s Word for your life?

A Child of God, Thankful for Guidance and Life Found in The Word of God!

Pastor Jonathan

·       I did go FISHING once this past week.  On Friday, February 2, I went fishing with Thomas Dudeck on Orange Lake.  Even after dropping my boat on my left foot, we went fishing.  AND, after a number of hours of no bites, or few bites, we came home with 9 bass!  Here are some pictures of the fishing!  https://photos.app.goo.gl/nQMx8DjfhaNjK3pT7

ABOUT THIS DEVOTION - I retired at the end of August 2019 from serving as full-time senior pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer, AK.  I was writing a weekly devotion previously entitled, "Thoughts from the Pastor."  When I retired many asked me to continue writing these devotions.  So I have continued writing.  However, with life's changes I now call this weekly devotion "Journeys Through Life as a Child of God."  Since I am no longer senior pastor at St. John, I felt it right to only send this message to those who asked to receive it.  (Currently I am serving as Vacancy Pastor for First Lutheran Church in Gainesville, FL.)

So, if you stopped receiving these devotions and wondered why, now you understand.  And, if you are now receiving these devotions and do not wish to receive them, please let me know, and I’ll gladly remove your name from my distribution list.  My e-mail address is jonrock53@mtaonline.net.

My prayer is that these devotions help each of you in your daily walk with our Lord, Jesus.
