Grieving the Tragedy of Another Mass Shooting, Finding Hope Only in JESUS!

Dear Fellow Children of God,

The horrible, senseless, tragedy happened again!  ANOTHER mass shooting!!  This time, from what I read, a man in Shreveport, LA, whose marriage was falling apart, shot and killed 8 children and shot 2 women on Sunday, April 19.  Seven of the children were his own. One of the women was his estranged wife. This is different from other shootings whether Columbine, Bethel, Sandy Hook, Orlando, Las Vegas, or the too many other incidents where hurt people, hurt people.  They are all unique.  WHAT do we do in the face of such needless violence and loss of life?  How does a Christian, a child of God respond?

This Tuesday morning, April 21, I sat in a meeting of Lutheran pastors, and we closed our gathering with some verses which touched my heart.  May you know 2 Corinthians 4:7-16.

7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, "I believed, and so I spoke," we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. 15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”  Three truths from these verses speak to me.

First, this world is falling apart.  Modern culture is falling apart in more ways than just mass shootings.  But, life in this world has always been this way, whether today, or in Paul’s time, or in the time of Jesus, or the time of the prophets, or the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, or in the time of Adam.  We live in a world of sin, and rebellion against our Lord and our Creator has consequences.  So Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:9, “8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;”  The world is full of sin, and this sin creates chaos in the lives of followers of Jesus, and chaos in the whole world.  Just look at Shreveport!

Secondly, there is an answer to this falling apart, this chaos.  Our Heavenly Father sent His Son, our Savior Jesus.  In LOVE, the Son of God took on the sin and violence and chaos of this world to pay for our sin, to redeem the world, and to bring God’s love.  Consider Jesus’ cross!  So Paul writes in verses 10-11, “10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.  (Also verse 15.)  In His death Jesus paid the debt which we and the world owe for sin, a price we can never pay.  In His resurrection, Jesus overcame sin, and gives us life, even new life here.

Finally, this sin and chaos and falling apart is not the plan nor the work of God.  Nevertheless, in His power and wisdom, and in His LOVE, God can use this chaos for His purpose.  17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.  God uses the afflictions of life to prepare us to desire His Eternal glory.  That glory gives hope and purpose to disciples of Jesus, even when the world is falling apart, even today.

I grieve in my heart for people in Shreveport whom I do not even know.  I ache because the chaos of sin has devastated more people.  In the midst of my shock and my grief, I am thankful for Jesus, who has overcome the world.  As Jesus himself said in John 16:33, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

Considering the Ten Commandments-Seeking to ‘Let God be God’ in My Life

Dear Fellow Children of God,

In my daily devotions I am now reading God’s word to His people in the book of Deuteronomy.  Last week I read chapter 5, the second ( “Deutero” means second in Latin.) giving of God’s Ten Commandments.  At this time the children of Israel were preparing to enter the Promised Land.  Yet, the first generation of Israelites had perished in the wilderness.  For a new generation, at the beginning of receiving the fulfillment of God’s promise given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Moses shared again the loving guidance of our Heavenly Father.

There are sad reasons Moses needed to share God’s instructions a second time.  God told Moses in Deuteronomy 9:13, “ . . . I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stubborn people.”  Moses recounted the many times God’s people had strayed. Moses was also honest with the Israelites about their relationship with their Lord.  “ . . . you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God and did not believe him or obey his voice. 24 You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.” (Deuteronomy 9:23-24)

As I read the Ten Commandments again, I considered sharing their wisdom in a devotion.  Yet, I realize that many today also do not want to hear the Lord’s commands.  We don’t want someone else telling us how to live, not even God.  People do not want someone telling us what to do.

Therefore, we may not like what God says about priorities (commandment 1). Nor about our speech (commandments 2 and 8). Nor concerning worship and rest (commandment 3). We may not want to hear or do what the Lord says about families and authority (commandment 4). Nor about caring for others (commandment 5). Nor the Lord’s commands concerning sex and sexuality (commandment 6). We may not like all God says about property, and greed (commandments 7, 9, and 10).  Unfortunately, perhaps we don’t realize that when we act in stubborn rebellion, like the Israelites, we are in effect making ourselves the god we follow!

The Lord’s response to the stubbornness of the Israelites called for a change to their hearts. 15 Yet the LORD set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. 16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.”  (Deuteronomy 10:15-17)  How do we get rid of our stubborn attitudes and behaviors?  How do we circumcise our hearts?

Perhaps some reflection helps.  First, consider who God is. 17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17)  Our Lord is the Creator of all! Compared to our weakness, He is Almighty!  He is wise beyond our so-called wisdom.  God is worth listening to!

Second, God knows, and perhaps we do, how broken we are.  How many times have we gone our own direction and found failure and hurt?  Do we really want to be the ones in charge?

Third, God knows our rebellion and our stubborn hearts.  Yet in love and grace and mercy, our Heavenly Father sent His only Son to live for us, to suffer and die for us, to rise for us. Such mercy defies human reason! His love is proved true and real in Jesus’ cross and empty tomb.  For the Ruler of all to love us so deeply, in spite of our stubborn, rebellious hearts, is AMAZING.

Ultimately, God forgives and saves us, not because of our obedience, but because of the sacrificial death and victorious resurrection of Jesus.  Yet, if we consider God’s power and wisdom and love, don’t we want to listen to and follow our Lord?

And here is one last bit of good news from Deuteronomy.  Why does God give the Ten Commandments a second time?  In Deuteronomy 10:13, we are taught, “. . . keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today FOR YOUR GOOD!”  We may not always understand, but Our Heavenly Father gives us His commands and directions for life, for our own good!  In a world of selfishness, and hatred, and greed, and violence, and death, following God’s commands allows us to live in His wisdom and in His power and love.

If we are wise, we want to follow God’s law, because He is God, not us.  We want to obey because our desires and wisdom have failed us time and again.  We want to live for Him, because God loves and saves us in Jesus.  Therefore, we follow God’s commands not because we have to do so. We follow the wisdom of God, because He loves us, because He saves us in Jesus.

Do you really want to be in charge of your life, to be your own god?  Or, do you know your sin and weakness? Do you desire the wisdom and love and salvation of the Almighty Lord of the Universe found in Jesus?  Deep down in my heart and soul, that is what I want!

Living in the Peace and Joy and Victory of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection!

Dear Fellow Children of God,

We had a great Holy Week and Easter celebration where I am currently serving as part-time assistant pastor.  Among the things for which I am thankful: The final Lenten Service was extremely well attended.  Worship attendance was up for all Holy Week Services.  The Easter Breakfast was bursting at the seams.  The Easter Egg hunt was the largest in years, and I did not see any tears.  The music was spectacular.  God’s word spoke effectively for many to whom I talked.  There is a LOT for which I am grateful as God’s people remembered Jesus’s death and resurrection for our salvation.

So . . . does that mean that Easter is over for another year?  If you and your congregation follow the lectionary cycle, you know that there are 7 Sundays in the Easter season.  So, no, in that way Easter is not over.  However, that is actually a small thing.

More importantly, the truth is that the victory Jesus won that first Easter continues to bless our lives even after the celebration of the day is complete.  Jesus’ death has accomplished full payment and forgiveness for our sins!  Jesus’ resurrection has defeated sin, and Satan, and death, and has won eternal life for us, and for all who believe in Him.  What we celebrate during Holy Week makes a difference for good throughout our lives, and into eternity!  Listen to 1 Corinthians 15. “55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)

So . . . I lost two friends whom I have known for over 50 years to death during Holy Week.  But Jesus died for our sins and He rose to win eternal life. “55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ . . . 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  My friends celebrated Easter in heaven, with Jesus!

Every time I seem to get one medical issue under control, a new concern arises.  I guess I am almost 73.  Sigh!   55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ . . . 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Therefore, I continue to face life and deal with the opportunities to serve my Lord as one of His redeemed children.

I have concerns about the salmon counts in Alaska, about a drought in Florida, about the unusually cold weather in Alaska which has frozen the pipes from our house to our septic tank, and about the early heat in Arizona which some friends have left quickly.  55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ . . . 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  I am not in charge, but I know the One who is.  He loved me enough to send His Son for me.

I have prayed for people whom I care about concerning their faith, knowing that Jesus has saved them, and hoping they know Jesus’ love and salvation too.  Their salvation is accomplished because of what Jesus did on Good Friday and on Easter, if they receive it.  55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ . . . 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

I could talk about the wars in the world around us, about the troubles faced by families in our world, about the growing divisions in our country and around the world.  These concerns have not gone away.  But, Jesus has won victory over Satan, and sin, and death!  55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ . . . 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Today I pray for all who read this devotion that, as you face the concerns and troubles and losses of life, that you know Jesus’ Easter victory, and that you bring that victory to the world around you, spreading the peace and joy of His resurrection! “55 ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ . . . 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

·       On Easter Sunday afternoon, following our celebrations at church, I went fishing on the St. John’s River south of Palatka.  Last Easter I caught a lot of bass on the Rodman Reservoir.  But, Rodman and many lakes are dry in the current drought. This year I had 2 bites and caught no fish.  ☹Here are a couple of pictures. https://photos.app.goo.gl/xBFPQCUVSs5ZbRm4A

·       On Tuesday, April 7, John Dudeck and I went fishing on the Lower Suwannee River.  Here are some pictures.  https://photos.app.goo.gl/TT1AV4Airq45shW76

·       I also golfed on Monday and Wednesday!  😊

ABOUT THIS DEVOTION - I retired at the end of August 2019 from serving as full-time senior pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer, AK.  I was writing a weekly devotion previously entitled, "Thoughts from the Pastor."  When I retired many asked me to continue writing these devotions.  So I have continued writing.  However, with life's changes I now call this weekly devotion "Journeys Through Life as a Child of God."  Since I am no longer senior pastor at St. John, I felt it right to only send this message to those who asked to receive it.  (However, I currently serve as Assistant to the Pastor for First Lutheran Church in Gainesville, FL.)

So, if you stopped receiving these devotions and wondered why, now you understand.  And, if you are now receiving these devotions and do not wish to receive them, please let me know, and I’ll gladly remove your name from my distribution list.  My e-mail address is jonrock53@mtaonline.net.

My prayer is that these devotions help each of you in your daily walk with our Lord, Jesus.
